Pig Iron travels to PITTSBURGH to ask the questions: What physical engagement does an actor need to meet the demands of the stage? How can the body become a trained instrument that can transform into a character? And how do we physically communicate and react before we need the voice and words to express a feeling?
January Session 2026
January 6—17, 2026
In this two-week workshop, participants will learn the process of creating an ensemble-devised work of theatre through Pig Iron's tried-and-true generative exercises and creation approaches. This devising workshop emphasizes developing original material, physicalizing characters and theatrical ideas, structuring group improvisations into finished pieces and the role music and rhythm play in theatrical creation. Participants will work on taking material developed through improvisation and turning it into pieces that are precise, full, exuberant, and moving. The workshop culminates in an invited showing of short original pieces created during the two weeks.

Pig Iron School and Rowan University unite
Pig Iron Theatre Company and Rowan University’s College of Performing Arts excitedly announce that they are partnering to establish a Master of Fine Arts and graduate certificate in Devised Performance. Beginning in early 2025, the Pig Iron School will continue its mission to train the next generation of daring, innovative theater artists, in partnership with Rowan, through an accredited master’s program centered on movement, improvisation, and ensemble creation.
